Russ House
Marianna, FL 32446
This historic home dates back to 1895 and is rumored to be haunted by several spirits. Today, the house operates as the home of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the county’s visitor center. In 1864, this was the site of the Battle of Marianna, which killed several soldiers. In 1930, during the Great Depression, the builder, Joseph W. Russ, Jr. committed suicide. Witnesses have claimed to smell mysterious scents of perfumes and elevators that work on their own. The apparition of a man with a mustache has also been seen in photos and standing at the top of the stairs. A man has also been photographed looking out the windows of the house.

As I was setting up for a wedding reception, I had a weird feeling that I was not alone as I explored the house. Two wedding guests arrived early and I ushered them to the top floor where tables were set up. We were standing by one of the doors to the porch, chatting when I noticed one of the two rockers was rocking. I looked at the trees for wind movement and there was none. I looked back at both chairs and only one was still rocking. I only motioned my eyes to the couple. When they realized what was going on, the lady gasped and said something out loud. The chair abruptly stopped.
Someone was sitting in that chair.

The day I took the tour was in a little bit freaky. To start of, as I walked up the stairs I had a weird chill up my spine. Secondly, when I sat on the couch cause my feet hurt but then after sitting for a minute or so it seemed as the coushin next to me was slowly lowering just like the tour guide said might.

My uncle used to live in the Russ House before it was the chamber of commerce. I stayed there with him some as a child and it was a gorgeous old house that had seen better days. There were several times that I felt like someone was present when I was alone. My uncle has said that he heard noises at night, that the lights would flicker and the doors would sometimes lock on their own. The doors that we're impossible to open or unlock would open with no force later.
