In December, 1972, Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 crashed here, killing 101 people. 75 people survived. Since the swampy conditions were terrible, many died in just 18 inches of water. Due to the crash, the site is believed to be haunted. Teams in john-boats claimed they heard screaming and whimpering around the site, but when they searched there was no one to be found. One member of the search team said he saw a pale, eyeless body floating right beneath the water. When he turned to tell the other members, they turned to see, but the body was gone.

Strangely enough, the ValuJet Flight 593 crashed in May of 1996 just two miles north of this crash site, killing all 110 people on board. A memorial site and marker stands today at the location.

After this crash, a well known book called ""The Ghost of Flight 401"" was published. It tells the story of multiple sightings of the flight's captain and second officer in subsequent years on board other Eastern Air Lines flights.
